One Good Thing

It’s taken me far too long, but I have learned to not work for titles. Academia loves titles – are you a full professor? An executive vice president? A success coach with oak cluster? You are generally expected to work hard for a new card, even if it comes with no increase in compensation, in which case, these “promotions” mean little and are basically the work equivalent of a pizza party for selling the most gift wrap to finance the prom. And you are far more than your work title.

One sign I had early on that my Beloved was for me was that he had a personal card – these used to be de rigueur throughout society, although now they’re so uncommon as to be quaint. His had his name and “Sentient Being” printed on it.

I was immediately charmed.

I love personal cards. My mother used them and I  clearly picked up the habit. At one time, I was a “notorious adventuress,” now I’m a “swell dame.”

Do not wait for the world to give you a title, Divas. Spend $20 and claim your own crown.
