One Good Thing

The Summer Solstice weekend is an excellent time to go outside and get your hands dirty – lots and lots of sunlight gives a Diva plenty of time to bring some plans into focus.

The yard of my Beloved and me needs work. The grass is kept trimmed and when we recently had a few young “volunteer” trees that were too close to the house lopped down, I could really see the state of things. There is a great deal of potential, but much needs to be done. I’ve never wanted a “putting green” yard and, knowing what we know now about the importance of attracting pollinators, my difficulty has been in finding the balance between “not a total meadow” and “going wild.”

So today, I found a balance between a little bit of a Sunday lie-in and getting some work done before the Carolina heat really ramped up. I lopped and pulled and cut to clear space (wiregrass, you are my Nemesis!), planted about 30 pollinator-attracting summer bulbs (which should have gone in a month ago, but it’s been a crazy-busy time), and began to get a plan for a stretch that will involve a Bush Hog, but will eventually be a garden. I’m not digging out all the dandelions and clover – they actually attract any number of useful pollinators – although I want to add plenty of native wildflowers as well. (That’s a visit to my local Co-Op Extension Service in my near future!)

I also filled a few bird feeders and dug out my mirror strands that have been hanging in storage since we moved into our house here – THREE YEARS AGO! Then put up the tools, drank my fourth glass of water for the day and gave thanks that there was cold sports drink in the fridge.

I’m telling you, whimsy takes work!
