It’s been a little while since I’ve written a “One Good Thing” post centered on Gaffney, the small city where I work. It’s not that there isn’t anything to write about; it’s more a combination of being quite busy with work and the added effort of preparing for what looks to be a massive sleet-and-ice storm bearing down on us beginning Saturday. Right now, my Beloved and I are as prepared as we can be – we learned a lot from Helene – but you can only do so much. For large parts of the Southeast, I fear that it’s been so long since we’ve seen a storm system that didn’t go “bust” that we’re flirting with a piper who is playing what could be a very expensive and destructive tune. We’ll see.
At any rate, yesterday and today have been deceptively mild weather-wise. Cold, but not frigid and bright blue skies for the most part. Yesterday, I took a few minutes at lunch and walked a couple of blocks up to the Gaffney Visitors Center, which was created by restoring the old Post Office. It’s a beautiful building and the restoration was very thoughtfully done – it’s well worth a stop and the staff is crazy-helpful.
It’s also the home of the Cherokee Alliance of Visual Artists (or “CAVA”) which I discovered I was eligible to join. (I assumed membership was limited the County residents, but no. Always ask, kids! You never know.) As a member, I’d be allowed to enter several pieces in any CAVA exhibit, which is awfully tempting. Tonight, I went back for an exhibit opening – such friendly people and some amazing pieces in a variety of media – you should check it out!
By the way, I’ve updated my Redbubble shop, taking down a lot of older designs and adding about a dozen newer ones. Go check it out – if you see anything you like, you can order straight off the site and they’ll make up your order (cards, a phone case, maybe a shower curtain? You do you, Boo-boo!) and ship it straight to you. I only make a few cents off each item that sells (generally far less than a dollar), but Redbubble is set up to do the printing and shipping, so it works out for me and for you. And that reminds me – if I do exhibit with CAVA, my pieces will be available for sale, but like most galleries, CAVA takes a commission to cover operating expenses. So if you see anything here on the site that interests you, let me know and you’ll save the commission fee!
Support local art, Divas! Regardless of where you are, you are surrounded by talented artists worth your support. Please seek them out!
And take the storm warnings seriously.
