In my circle of friends, I am one of the only ones who not just enjoys, but actively looks forward to, the Super Bowl. (Or the “Superb Owl,” as it is also known, thanks to What We Do in the Shadows, which is really a great, very offbeat show, if you haven’t seen it yet.) Honestly, most of my close friends are just not sports folks – including my Beloved.
Due to this, our streaming packages don’t include much in the way of sports channels – and we long ago decided that we’d have one television in the house, so nearly all of our watching is done together. (There are exceptions, of course. We have different tastes in some things and sometimes I go paint while he watches a Korean drama, or he goes to work on a model kit while I soak up a Golden Age Hollywood comedy.)
But – while it didn’t need to be a big party-style event, I wanted to watch the Super Bowl tonight, even if it’s just me enjoying the game, the halftime show, and the commercials (yes, I like the commercials). So I figured out how to get a free trial of YouTube TV, put a reminder on my calendar to cancel before I get charged a ridiculous amount for a regular subscription, and went about my day.
At some point, the realization hit me. My Beloved is an amazing human being. While the game isn’t his cup of tea, he refuses to put my joy last. Plenty of people would have said, “Let’s set that up on your laptop,” or just “You know I don’t like that sort of thing.” Instead, he’s happily picking out the next book he’s going to start reading. At various times of the evening, he’ll cross the living room and ask how the game’s going, because even those he has no real interest, he knows I do.
I hope I’m as good to him as he is to me.
And go Seahawks!
