One Good Thing

Today is International Women’s Day, a day set aside to celebrate the cultural, artistic, intellectual, and political achievements of women, while also calling attention to ongoing problems faced by women, such as the wage gap, widespread abuse of girls and women, and the ever-ongoing struggle to have women recognized as full human beings.

That’s a lot to pack into one measly 24-hour period, and since we “sprang forward” in the US with the onset of Daylight Savings Time today, it’s not even a full 24 hours.

So it is a fantastic day to surround yourself with your tribe. Your wise women, your starry-eyed maidens, your eagle-eyed young mothers and all those who love them – this is your day. Learn the stories that have been kept alive quietly rather than making the history books. Buy the books for your local library to inspire the next generation. Let the power of our ancestors stiffen our spines and square our shoulders. Donate to a women’s college or university. Seek out women’s spaces – I attended a Women’s Circle and Guided Meditation today and – absolutely no kidding – it was an awe-inspiring experience to be part of a group of women whose age range spanned half a century who found common ground, listened carefully, and offered advice when asked (seriously, sometimes people don’t want advice as much as they just want someone to listen. Read the room).

Be well, Divas.
