One Good Thing

Today’s OGT was feeling appreciated at work. I’m taking a long weekend to celebrate my 16th wedding anniversary with my Beloved (for some truly bizarro reason, wax is the traditional gift. Not sure about that one. Maybe I’ll receive a bag of Babybel cheeses), so I was trying to resolve as much as I could before leaving. Of course, I didn’t get it all done, but these folks got along fine before I stepped onto the scene. However, I like to think my efforts help with the gargantuan task of helping a small city grow and yes – like most people, I like being appreciated.

But to work with people who practice the preaching of, “PTO is part of your total compensation. Take a couple of days; it’s been crazy busy lately” is game-changing.

I have many friends who work in establishments that seem to view employees as nuisances. I have such sympathy for them – I’ve been that person and it’s demoralizing.

Work is an important part of life and, speaking as someone who is still smarting from an abrupt workplace closure that dumped hundreds of employees in the street and over a thousand students in the gutter, I know the sinking feeling of not knowing what the next step is and starting to really get worried about bills.

But you deserve work that values you. If you have it, help others find it. If you don’t have it, don’t be shy about doing the work to figure out what you need and where to start looking for it.

Work has dignity.

And labor has power.
