My Beloved and I have spent this weekend celebrating our wedding anniversary. We didn’t do anything particularly large – no cruise or Broadway show, no weekend away or couples retreat – we just acted as tourists in our own town and surrounding area. We visited our favorite types of shops – book, record, art, chocolate. We ate delicious food and people-watched. We both spent time on our respective creative endeavors and cheered each other on. It’s been lovely and it has given me a great opportunity to discuss something magical – the lagniappe.
I first came across the term while reading a short story, the title of which is completely lost to me now. In essence, the term (which derives from Cajun French) means “a little extra.” It’s a small gift tossed your way for no real reason other than brimming-over generosity. We were surrounded by lagniappe over this weekend. Desserts, stickers, a funny notepad, bookmarks . . . maybe Emerson was right that “all the world loves a lover.” My Beloved and I have come through some rough times – anyone who’s been married for 16 years has. Maybe that’s what makes it magical.
We deliberately chose May 1 as our wedding day – it’s a day that just bursts with joy, flowers, sunshine, and optimism. And part of the magic of all of that is taking the time – REALLY TAKING THE TIME – to see that, whether the day itself is warm and sunshiny or slightly cool and overcast. The sun’s there, regardless.
Magic isn’t so much complicated rituals and arcane symbols. It’s much more reaching the realization that life is meant to be enjoyed and then going out and doing that with someone you love.
May this month be magical for us all.
