Not Everyone Will Get You

Sad, really, but inescapable. Some people just are Debbie Downers, some dislike seeing women of a certain age behave in ways that are outside their particular worldviews, and a very few are just unhappy people.

What to do when someone yucks your yum?

There are, of course, a number of responses that don’t involve having a bail bondsman on speed-dial, ranging from a quick smile to a shoulder shrug and it’s up to each particular Diva to determine the best response. Unfortunately, I have a very clear example to share.

Yesterday, I took a short lunchtime walk. As you know, I do this frequently and often find delightful hidden spots to share as “One Good Thing” posts. As I was walking, I turned a corner and heard deep, mellow wind chimes. Following the sound, I found the back of a coffee-and-bookstore I’ve visited a few times had been transformed into a courtyard space with tables and chairs. The covered space channeled the breeze and overlooked some herb beds planted with lush lavender and rosemary bushes. I made note of it and decided I’d go back today, have my lunch, and browse the store.

So I did. I had my lunch, complete with cutlery and placemats and enjoyed the garden and the breeze, idly reading the first bit of a throwaway historical mystery. It was shaping up to be a lovely break in a busy day.

A young woman I believe to be the owner stepped outside with a cardboard box to break down and stopped at the sight of me. I politely said hello and mentioned how beautiful I found the spot and how I was looking forward to an iced coffee to finish my lunch.  And she said,

“It is nice here – for customers.”

Well.

You should be polite to all who cross your path regardless, but let me emphasize that I looked completely respectable. (I’d venture to say my accessories and spectator-style ballet flats made me downright adorable, but that’s only my opinion.) I smiled rather tightly,  said, “The coffee is for afterwards” and turned my attention back to my lunch, but it wasn’t as good anymore.

I went in the shop when I finished and chatted with the barista about coffee recommendations and left with one, but the joy was gone. The owner never made eye contact with me or said a word, despite being five feet from me. And no, I did not tip. Anyone can have a bad day, but — no.

I shall not inflict my business on her again. I do not stay in rooms where I am clearly unwelcome.

But I also won’t linger on this. The world is full of wonderful things, beautiful places, and kind people.

And I’m going to find some more of them.

It’s a lovely quote, but I doubt the owner has read it. Not closely, anyway.
