One Good Thing

My day began with my quarterly visit to the rheumatologist to make sure I continue to remain stable on a drug treatment for my (fortunately mild) rheumatoid arthritis. This appointment always involves a blood draw and the staff is super skilled. I’m enough of a regular that they noticed my pixie haircut. Compliments should be given frequently, so if you see something, say something.

I decided to treat myself to a Krispy Kreme Original Glaze – truly the best doughnut on the open market. We don’t have a Krispy Kreme in the sticks, so I drove a couple of miles and went in to buy my treat.

Lo and behold, the machinery that is the heart of the Krispy Kreme empire was broken and they had had to truck in 28 dozen doughnuts from another location. While it wasn’t “hot ‘n’ now” (the very best way to have an Original Glaze – it’s like eating sugared air), I got the Very Last One in the store.

I chatted with the girl behind the counter – no one else was there, and a few minutes of polite conversation is a dying art. They have special Looney Tunes doughnuts right now, but no Daffy Duck, which we both agreed was just — not right.

Needing to get a move on, I waved my bag containing my precious pastry towards her and said, “How much?”

She smiles and says, “On the house. Why not?”
