It Starts Small . . .

For years now, I’ve been putting Diva principles into practice and, while I still have days when old habits sneak up to the forefront, overall I have to say that this way of life suits me. I have – with consistent effort and a great deal of curiosity – come much closer to my goal of creating a life I enjoy, in an environment that I find uplifting and beautiful.

And it all started with a shower.

Really.

One day, I stubbornly decided that, since so much of my life was out of my control, I just wouldn’t tolerate one more shower that wasn’t exactly the temperature I wanted.

That was it. Just one small thing. From there, I started applying those principles to other aspects of my life. When my vision changed to the point that wearing contacts just wasn’t working for me anymore, why couldn’t I get eyeglasses that were colorful and fun? When age and necessary medications made my figure a bit curvier than I was used to, why couldn’t I wear well-made clothes cut in vintage styles? (Never overlook a well-tailored A-line dress, Divas. Never.) My opinion regarding my life was the one that mattered, so I needed to figure out what I liked and then come up with resources that let me build the life I wanted.

It takes time, patience, and persistence, Divas. But you can figure out what you want and then carve your path. The “Diva Drills” here are intended to help with that and here are six other suggestions to get you started:

Insist on a few things that are just the way you like them. The right temperature for your shower, your preferred fixings in your coffee, your favorite shade of lipstick close at hand. The less “it’ll do” you allow in for small things that matter to you, the better.

Try new things. Take a class, send off for samples, or attempt a new cooking technique.

Create comfort. Wash your sheets, set up the coffee the night before with your favorite mug right on the counter, and have a very comfortable robe for well-deserved lounging.

Look for quality. (Do not confuse this with expense.) Shop for vintage, buy healthy food in season, and enjoy the best, whether that’s ice cream, whiskey, or cigars.

Invoke elegance. Wear the heirloom jewelry, use the antique china, or experiment with perfume. (The picture at the top of this post is of my samples from Noteworthy. I’m currently wearing N. 551 and it seems to suit these fall days.)

Go outside. Scrunch through leaves, watch the sunset over a lake, and breathe in the crisp fall air.

You deserve the very best, Diva. So go find it.
