Today’s One Good Thing is a realization.
For the last two-plus months, I’ve taught an upper-level class at a law school. This involves driving two hours each way to teach this once a week, seminar-style class. It’s been a good experience and it’s also been humbling. I prepare for the class and I know the material, but (as any good teacher will tell you) knowing the material and being able to teach the material are two very different things.
I’ve had sessions that felt like I was just a bumbler who didn’t know a covenant from a warranty. (Doesn’t matter, just trust me – they’re different things.) I’ve started on the wrong chapter, dropped my pen, called students by the wrong name – ugh.
But they learned. I may have needed to take a second run at explaining the concept, but – judging from the work they did today – they’ve been learning. And I became more patient with myself.
Today, I stopped for a strong coffee before class and thought about it for a bit. Since Pyrite imploded and I took a position outside of higher education that is more rigidly scheduled, today may have been my last class.
And I’d be happy with that.
Not shabby at all.
